Ευθύνες στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες επιρρίπτει ο Σέρβος πρωθυπουργός Βόιτσλαβ Κοστούνιτσα για το αδιέξοδο στο οποίο οδηγήθηκε και ο δεύτερος γύρος των απευθείας διμερών συνομιλιών για το μελλοντικό καθεστώς του Κοσσυφοπεδίου.
Ο Κοστούνιτσα σε χθεσινή του ανακοίνωση τονίζει πως η Ουάσιγκτον δρα ανοιχτά υπέρ του διαμελισμού του Κοσσυφοπεδίου, ενώ επιθυμεί «με κάθε τίμημα» να εμποδίσει τους Αλβανούς του Κοσσυφοπεδίου να αποδεχθούν έναν συμβιβασμό που θα οδηγούσε σε λύση κοινής αποδοχής για το μελλοντικό καθεστώς της σερβικής επαρχίας.
«Οι καθημερινές δηλώσεις [...] περί μονομερούς αναγνώρισης της ανεξαρτησίας του Κοσσυφοπεδίου έχουν σκοπό να εμποδίσουν με κάθε τίμημα τους Αλβανούς Κοσοβάρους να αποδεχτούν έναν συμβιβασμό για την επαρχία», δηλώνει ο Κοστούνιτσα, και αναφερόμενος στους αεροπορικούς βομβαρδισμούς της χώρας του το 1999 προσθέτει: «Οι ΗΠΑ και το ΝΑΤΟ βομβάρδισαν βίαια και παράνομα τη Σερβία και έφεραν τα στρατεύματά τους στο Κοσσυφοπέδιο για να υπεξαιρέσουν το 15% του εδάφους μας».
Ο Σέρβος πρωθυπουργός καταλήγει: «Δεν θα σταματήσουμε να επαναλαμβάνουμε ότι το Κοσσυφοπέδιο δεν μπορεί να είναι ένα λάφυρο πολέμου του ΝΑΤΟ και ότι τα διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένα σύνορα της Σερβίας θα παραμείνουν αμετάβλητα όσο θα υπάρχει ο Χάρτης του ΟΗΕ».
Ο εκπρόσωπος του Στέιτ Ντιπάρτμεντ, Τομ Κέισι, είχε δηλώσει μία μέρα πριν ότι εάν δεν υπάρξει συμφωνία έως τη 10η Δεκεμβρίου -προθεσμία που έχει τεθεί από το Συμβούλιο Ασφαλείας του ΟΗΕ- «αυτό που αναμένουμε να συμβεί είναι να προχωρήσουμε μπροστά [...] με ανεξαρτησία υπό διεθνή επιτήρηση για το Κοσσυφοπέδιο, στη βάση των προτάσεων του Μάρτι Αχτισάαρι».
Η κυβέρνηση Μπους έχει δηλώσει με κάθε ευκαιρία και προς πάσα κατεύθυνση πως η ανεξαρτησία είναι η μόνη λύση που εγγυάται τη σταθερότητα και έχει αφήσει να εννοηθεί πως θα προχωρήσει άμεσα σε αναγνώριση του ανεξάρτητου Κοσσυφοπεδίου σε περίπτωση που οι Αλβανοί Κοσοβάροι προχωρήσουν σε μονομερή ανακήρυξη ανεξαρτησίας.
